About the Speaker(s)

Dr. Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro has been Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Rochester since August 2016. Here, he’s demonstrated his ability to grow a program, leading his team to double the number of organ transplants with the best outcomes in the program’s history. Under his leadership, URMC restarted live donor liver transplants, performing 60 operations over 5 years. He also expanded opportunities for transplant through increased use of donation after cardiac death organs. Dr. Hernandez recently opened a program on liver transplantation for unresectable colorectal liver metastases, currently the leading center in volume and outcomes in North America. He also has expertise in liver resections and is one of a handful of US surgeons performing the ALPPS procedure.

Dr. Hernandez has received multiple grants for innovative research in liver cancer and regeneration and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of HPB and liver transplantation. In 2019, he joined the editorial board of Annals of Surgery, the highest impact factor surgical journal. Dr. Hernandez-Alejandro has positions in many societies, including the Scientific Committee of the ALPPS Registry, Chair of the ILTS Education Committee, Chair of the Scientific Program for the American Transplant Conference, and President of the New York Liver Transplant Consortium. Dr. Hernandez is a member of the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious Surgical Society in North America.
