Biosketch: Robert M. Esterl, Jr., M.D. was a cum laude graduate from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in 1982. He was an AOA graduate from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1986. He was an intern in General Surgery at Saint Louis University hospitals from 1986-87 and a resident in General Surgery at Saint Louis University hospitals from 1986-1991. He pursued an abdominal transplant fellowship at Saint Louis University hospitals and at the University of Nebraska hospitals from 1991-1994. He has been a faculty transplant surgeon in the Department of Surgery at University of Texas Health Science Center since 1994.

In addition to clinical interest in kidney and pancreas transplantation, Dr. Esterl has been closely involved in the education effort of medical students. He is currently a co director of the second year course entitled "Introduction to Clinical Science." He is the course director for the third year surgery clerkship. He is the faculty contact for surgery rotations for fourth year medical students. He is an active member of the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and is the Chair of the Evaluations and Outcomes Subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee. He has been the recipient of several departmental teaching awards in addition to the UTHSCSA Excellence in Teaching award in 2004. He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher by the graduating senior class for 3 consecutive years and was an Assistant Marshall at the School of Medicine commencement ceremony in 2005.
